DBA Publication Requirements in California
California law requires fictitious business names to be published in a qualifying newspaper of general circulation for four consecutive weeks. Learn the rules and how Administry handles publication for you.
The Newspaper Publication Requirement
California Business and Professions Code Section 17917 requires that every person who files a fictitious business name statement publish it in a newspaper of general circulation once a week for four consecutive weeks. This requirement must be completed within 30 days of the filing date.
The publication requirement is a public notice mechanism — it creates a local record of who is doing business under a particular trade name. After the four-week run is complete, the newspaper provides a notarized affidavit of publication, which must then be filed with the county clerk to complete the registration.
Administry identifies a qualifying newspaper in your county, places the notice, coordinates the four-week run, and files the affidavit on your behalf. You don't need to find a newspaper, draft a legal notice, or track the publication dates. See How Administry Files Your DBA for the complete process.
